he stared into the faint beams that came from the community.
I d guess your light has been noticed. He pushed Shara toward the water. Time
to get back to the tran-bus.
Agreed. She pushed the tent down that bobbed at the entrance and then jumped
in on top of it.
In the next minute she disappeared. Romair slipped into the water, pulling the tarp
over the ground and then dragging it in with him. He sat there at the edge, his legs
soaking up the warm water, and stared through the darkness toward the lights.
What kind of people lived up here? And to think for thirty-four years he d lived in
South Passage, directly underneath this town. They knew nothing of his people, and he
knew nothing of them. His stomach twisted with a mixture of emotions. That was about

to change. He knew it. He felt it to the core of his bones. They not only made history
tonight, they were about to change how his people viewed their world. They definitely
weren t alone.
It shouldn t be too hard to create something that goes over our feet, Romair
suggested once they were back in the tran-bus.
Water never felt better as it dripped down his body. They d taken their time
gathering the drifting supplies they d thrown into the hole before returning to the
ocean. Both of them had dried out too quickly on the surface. That was a problem he
didn t have a ready answer for.
I need time to think. Shara didn t look at him but settled into the passenger seat.
Take me home and we ll discuss this more tomorrow.
Romair stared at the back of her head, running his hand through his wet hair. He
was still a bit overheated from the surface but that didn t bother him as much right now
as what to do about Shara. The last thing he wanted to do was take her home.
Shara.
No. She sliced her hand through the air, turning her head slightly, as if she
already knew he would bring up her behavior after they d had sex.
She might not want to talk about it. But he sure as hell did.
He moved closer. She wouldn t block him out, or refuse to discuss something
before she knew for sure what he meant to bring up.
She glanced up at him with a worried expression before looking down at her lap
quickly. He fought the pain that swelled inside him. She would just as soon forget what
had happened between them before they went to the surface. Like hell that would
happen.
Shara, he repeated, taking her chin and forcing her to look up at him again. She
glared at him angrily. He ignored it and the frustration that coursed through him that
she d look at him like that. We had some incredible sex. Don t try to deny that.
She grabbed his wrists, trying to make him let go of her but he simply tightened his
grip.
Now isn t the time to talk about this. I have a job to do. All that matters right now
is the surface. Now take me home, Romair.
Now is exactly when we ll talk about this. He pulled her out of her seat, grabbing
her arms and fighting the urge to give her a quick shake. We both have jobs to do. That
doesn t change the fact that something just happened here. Something you aren t going
to block out and ignore.
It was sex, Romair. Hell, you have it all the time. Don t make an issue out of it.
She glared at him but then looked down.
He caught something in her expression fear and uncertainty. He doubted it had
anything to do with what she d do next concerning the surface. If a lady gave him the
brush-off after sex he let her go. Not that it happened too often. Hell. He couldn t

remember when it had last happened. But he knew that s how he d react if a lady didn t
want to see him again. He wouldn t press the issue. There were plenty of willing
women swimming out there. An unpleasant sensation gripped his insides. A frantic
unpleasant feeling that if he honored her request to not make an issue out of it, he d
never touch her again.
Talking about it is hardly making an issue out of it. He fought for words to
convince her they hadn t made a mistake in fucking. You enjoyed fucking me as much
as I enjoyed you. And we re going to do it again.
She looked up at him wide-eyed. This is exactly why I don t have sex with anyone
I know.
Why is that? He did give her a little shake before he could stop himself. He
wanted to yell at her, get her to climb out of the damned shell she had clamped around
her. Are you so terrified that someone might know the real you?
You do know the real me. She chewed her lower lip, and lifted her gaze slowly to
meet his. Everyone has parts of them they keep to themselves, Romair. There s nothing
wrong with that.
And there s nothing wrong with exploring something if you like it.
He let go of her arms and then stroked her damp cheek with his knuckles.
She closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly. We can t explore anything. Now
take me home, please.
She sat back in her chair, looking straight ahead. Damn her for being so stubborn.
He took his seat, gearing up the tran-bus and then turning it around toward New
Tasman. He d take her home, but he d be damned if he d leave her alone. In spite of
their silent ride across the ocean, he had to believe that she didn t want to be left alone.
No woman reacted to sex the way she had with him, and then truthfully told him she
didn t want it again.

He woke up the next morning to his phone buzzing next to him.
Yes? he said without bothering to see who called, and then cleared the sleep out
of his voice.
Get moving, man. Jolen didn t sound much more awake then he felt. We re
